Sherman OL Aaron Garza on committing to Texas: ‘I want to be a part of their … – Dallas Morning News (blog)

Mack Brown and his staff are just starting to make their presence felt in the Class of 2014. But it’s never too early to get a jump on future classes.

Over the weekend, Texas held its annual sophomore day, and the Longhorns came away with their first verbal commitment for the Class of 2015 in Sherman guard Aaron Garza.

“I decided to commit because I just really like the school,” he said. “It’s a good school academically and a degree from there would look good on anyone’s wall. The football program is coming back up, and I want to be a part of their next national championship team.”

Going into the day, the 6-foot-3, 307-pound Garza had no idea he was going to pick up an offer let alone commit. But in the end, he felt he made the right decision.

“I had been thinking about committing for a long, but I was just surprised and overwhelmed when Coach Brown offered me,” Garza said. “I was really happy and knew that I wanted to commit. Everything from the academics to the stadium was awesome. I think it’s a great place for me.”

Garza knows a lot can happen between now and signing day in 2015. After all, he recently saw his Michigan offer get pulled. But for now, his verbal is ‘solid’ and with his decision out of the way, Garza is now focused on his upcoming junior season.

“I want to get bigger, faster and stronger this offseason. I want to be the most elite athlete I can be. The strongest man will always win, and that’s why I want to get stronger,” he said. “I am hoping we at least make the playoffs, but everybody is always driving for that state ring.”

Garza also held an offer from Baylor and made unofficial visits to Alabama and SMU.
