HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — There are 250 cases of Blue Pants’ first beer to be packaged in six-packs, Workman Ale, sitting at the Madison brewery ready
to be shipped to local retailers.

Brewmaster Michael Spratley, 28, is still waiting on case-box packaging, but the Workman sixers should be available at locations such as Star Market, Liquor
Express and Earth Fare, by April 8 if not April 1.

A citrusy lager hybrid weighting in at 5 percent ABV
(alcohol by volume), Workman beat out Amber Waders of Grain, an amber lager, in
Blue Pants’ recent promotion, which used Facebook polls and draft account
information, to determine which brew would get the six-pack treatment.

“It started out pretty close,” Spratley says, calling from
the Blue Pants’ 10,000-square-foot brewery, “and then Workman kind of ran away
with it. About 75 percent of the vote went to Workman, and sales clearly indicated
Workman as well. But we actually had a lot of people that were big fans of
Amber Waves and were disappointed that wouldn’t be the first six-pack.”

The Workman six-packs of 12-ounce bottles arrives on the heels of Spare Pair. Single, 22-ounce bottles of Blue Pants’
spring seasonal hit Huntsville-area shelves in mid-March. Spratley
describes the 6 percent ABV Spare Pair as a “spring pale ale.” “The Citra hops
provide sort of an orange flavor, and the Sorachi (hops) gives it a lemon zest.
It’s really floral and should work well in the spring.”

In addition, Blue Pants will be opening a bar inside the Von
Braun Center, similar to the one Straight to Ale Brewing opened there in
January. Look for six to 12 Blue Pants beers to be on tap at the VBC, including
Pinstripe Stout, Tuxedo Black IPA and, in May, Slip Rose Strawberry Saison. The VBC and Blue Pants are targeting April 6 to open the Blue Pants venture there, to coincide with the Heads-N-Tails Crawfish Boil.

And finally, the weekend of April 25 Blue Pants plans to
unveil a new 4,000-square-foot patio area, dwarfing its 1,200-square-foot
taproom. The patio will feature an outdoor stage, garden design elements, stone
paths, picnic table area serviced by the food truck On-On Tacos, cocktail
tables, bocce court and more.

“We used to live in Atlanta,” Spratley says, “and a lot of the
places you go there have very limited inside seating and a ton of outdoor
seating. We kind of modeled the patio after those.”
